On Wednesday, October 26, Dave Cork was a guest speaker at Madison Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, discussing how government works.  The entire 4th and 5th grade classes attended, including some of Dave’s own neighbors.

Dave started by discussing the three branches of government and how they were formed.  Next they discussed the legislative process, including vetoes, overriding vetoes, Supreme Court involvement, and Constitutional Amendments.

The group also discussed the election process, and the Electoral College.  The students were eager to learn and asked a great deal of thoughtful questions.  Additional topics included how and why we have a bicameral Legislature, America’s two-party system compared to coalition governments of other democratic societies, Presidential term limits and appointed positions, such as Secretary of State and Chief of Staff.

Dave chose to volunteer at the school because he believes that it’s important for our future voters to understand how and why the system works.
